RENTSMART – A HOUSING STABILITY MODEL – IS EXPANDING CANADA WIDE
Victoria, B.C.,– RentSmart – housing stability model – a program of Ready to Rent BC, a not for profit is expanding across many Canadian provinces due to demand. RentSmart offers interactive education and support to increase housing stability and to prevent homelessness across Canada through successful tenancies for both tenants and landlords.
Many Canadian communities actively trying to increase housing stability and homelessness prevention have seen the potential, and Ready to Rent BC has been invited to help bring RentSmart to a growing network of partners across Canada. With its roots established in British Columbia, RentSmart has recently branched out into Alberta and Manitoba, with Ontario to begin to roll out early 2018. RentSmart courses are available in-person and online and have helped thousands of renters navigate the rental market, find and maintain housing.
“Being a good tenant and being a good landlord are not innate skills and can be taught. RentSmart is a proven educational approach that builds successful tenancies for both tenants and landlords. This is key to housing stability, prevention of homelessness and strong communities.” Kristi Rivait, Co-Executive Director, Ready to Rent BC.
Four million Canadians rent; 450,000 new renters enter the market each year. Tenants want a safe, suitable, affordable home to rent; landlords want tenants to pay rent on time, respect neighbours and take care of their property. Being a good tenant or a good landlord is a learnable skill. RentSmart provides education and support to tenants, landlords, and community champions with one goal: Successful Tenancies for all. Successful tenancies are key to building strong communities, increasing housing stability and preventing homelessness.
RentSmart Certificate curriculum is interactive education focused on developing reliable tenants, preventing damages and evictions and ending the homelessness cycle. RentSmart education is for anyone who wants to understand their role as tenants, may face barriers to housing, and want to reduce those barriers. RentSmart builds knowledge, confidence and life skills. Upon completion of the RentSmart Certificate course, participants earn the RentSmart Certificate of Completion. Landlords are able to verify the Certificate and know that graduates have taken the time to learn how to be a good tenant. A growing number of landlords are accepting the certificate as a reference.
For landlords wanting to be part of solving housing issues in their community, RentSmart Landlord delivers professional development courses to tenant managers, support workers, property managers, and landlords. This course builds knowledge, skills, and capacity in housing tenants who may be experiencing life transitions, best practices in being a landlord, strategies for successful tenancies, and how to access support to address issues if they arise.
Ready to Rent BC is building RentSmart networks in provinces across Canada with housing providers and community organizations by training their staff as Community Educators. RentSmart offers a four-day training RentSmart Educator that prepares staff as Community Educators to deliver the RentSmart curriculum to the communities they serve. Training includes best practices in housing stability and homelessness prevention, adult education and transformative training principles. Currently, there are over 230 Community Educators throughout B.C. and nearly a 100 in Alberta and Manitoba. Ontario will host its first RentSmart Educator training at the beginning of 2018.
“RentSmart Ontario is thrilled to be a part of such a strong homelessness prevention initiative focused on knowledge and skills, mitigating housing insecurity. We are looking forward to delivering the RentSmart education across Ontario and playing our part in this pan-Canadian effort under the leadership of Ready to Rent BC.” Sherry Madden, Provincial Community Engagement Coordinator, RentSmart Ontario.
