FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
RentSmart Certificates to be recognized at 1105 Seymour Building, Downtown Vancouver
Vancouver, B.C., October 5, 2017 – Ready to Rent BC team was present at the grand opening of the 1105 Seymour building downtown Vancouver this morning – an affordable housing initiative led by City of Vancouver. The building has 81 units and will house singles, couples and families in low-to-moderate incomes. The building will recognize RentSmart Certificates for tenants who wish to apply.
This innovative building partnership is exciting for Ready to Rent BC because it both increases the supply of housing and takes steps to increase housing stability. RentSmart Certificate teaches renters a combination of key life skills required for successful tenancies.
“Being a good tenant is not an innate skill and can be taught. RentSmart is a proven educational approach that builds successful tenancies for both tenants and landlords. 1105 Seymour’s goal to recognize the RentSmart certificate of tenants is key to housing stability, prevention of homelessness and strong communities.” Kristi Rivait, Co-Executive Director, Ready to Rent BC
1105 Seymour building will not only increase affordable housing units count, but will also house four non-profit organizations resulting in a purpose-built rental. By recognizing the RentSmart Certificate, the city of Vancouver is taking a key step increasing housing stability and homelessness prevention through education. As quoted in the City of Vancouver press release, “this housing building initiative is a key part of the City of Vancouver’s Housing and Homelessness strategy, aimed at revitalizing existing social housing units and creating new affordable, community focused housing.”
Ready to Rent BC team was present at the opening event along with Mayor Gregor Robertson, Dr. Brian Chittock with AIDS Vancouver, Neil Self with Positive Living BC, Marcia Tait with Aunt Leah’s, and Alison Clancey with SWAN. The event ended with a tour of the building by Mayor Robertson, followed by partners group photo (attached).
